History of Zelda

Zelda 64 World

For some players, Zelda 64 is the first Zelda game they've ever played. It was for me. So for those looking for a little history, or those older gamers wishing for a little nostalgia, here is a brief history of Zelda!!

The Legend of Zelda

Originally released in 1987, The Legend of Zelda kick-started a series and amazed gamers everywhere. Zelda was the first game where you could save your progress, so you could continue where you left off and finish your quest. The Priness Zelda has been captured, and Link had to find the eight shattered pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom to save her.

One of the most anticipated games of 1988, Link was far different from its predeccessor. Link introduced a new magic system, and was unlike other Zeldas a Traditional RPG with Level Ups, Experience Points, etc. In Link, players traveled around the Overworld like before, but in a town, dungeon, cave or battle were transferred to a side-scrolling setting. Some loved the game, some hated it. As per the story, Zelda is placed into eternal slumber by a mysterious wizard and Link must travel through Hyrule to get the Triforce of Courage and save her.

After much anticipation, Zelda arrived on the Super Nintendo in the form of A Link to the Past. LttP returned to the original's style of gameplay, with its viewpoint and control style. LttP is actually a prequel to the other 2, with Link travelling around Hyrule to save the Princess and the Six Sages' descendants from Ganon's wizard/minion, Aghanim.

Zelda arrived on the Game Boy in 1993, in Link's Awkening. A sister title to LttP, Link washes up on shore of Kolonheit Island after sailing through a huge storm. He then gathered the Instruments of the Sirens to awaken the Wind Fish, who returned him home. Black-and-white but cute with charming characters made LA a hit with Gamers all over. A Game Boy Color edition was released in 1998 with a secret extra dungeon.

In 1998 Zelda moved into 3D. Players controlled Link throughout a vibrant world, meeting characters and unraveling the deep storyline. A prequel to all the Zelda games, Link and his annoying fairy Navi travel the world, awakening the Six Sages to stop Ganon from controlling Hyrule and the Triforce. For no apparent reason, I have decided to show the UK Box.

In 2000 the follow-up to Ocarina of Time was released. Similar to Link's Awakening, MM is a side-story title in which Link, after saving Hyrule, wanders into the magical land of Termina where he must re-live the same 3 days of his life to stop the Moon from crashing into the world.

In 2001 Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons were released on the Game Boy Color. If you complete one game, you are given a password to continue your quest in the sequel, with extra additions to the storyline. Link travels through the lands of Holodrum and Labrynna to save the Oracles of Season and Ages, Din and Nayru.

With a bold new look that surprised everyone, Link took to the seas in 2003. With his trusty ship, the King of Red Lions, Link travels the Great Sea of Hyrule to collect the Pearls of the Goddesses, the Master Sword, and the Triforce of Courage to save Hryule from Ganon's clutches yet again.

The follow-up to the multiplayer game included in the GBA version of LttP, FSA follows the adventures of the Four Links on the GameCube. After watching Dark Link cause tons of trouble, Link picks up the Four Sword, splitting himself into four versions of himself. Unwittingly, he also re-releases the Wind Mage, Vaatai. With two adversaries to overcome, the Links must rescue Six Maidens (the sages' descendants) and Zelda from evil to restore peace yet again.

What's next for the Zelda series? Well, as you read this Nintendo is developing a new realistic-type Zelda for GameCube (shown above) and The Minish Cap for GBA. Minish follows the art style of FSA and WW, whilst Zelda 2005 (code name) more closely follows Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Whatever it is, us Zelda fans will be ready to play it, whenever it may be!
